TASK ONE -
What are the purposes of a music video?
The purpose for making a music video is mainly to promote the artist and
be able to make a financial profit. To make money, they would have to use many
different styles, techniques and conventions to draw the attention of people.
For the artistto recieve more income they
would a variety of these styles, techniques and conventions to make more people
likethe way they
create their music videos. Therefore, when they promote it and send them off
too various stores and websites - their fans wont hesitate to buy it.
Shorces of income and extension of outlet-
As you may or not know they is many shorces off income, where the artist can make
money. They normally vary from selling them off to stores or other the
internet. However, they can also make money off social networking sites like
Twitter and facebook
or even on television which is called Advertising.
Sygerny -
Sygerny can
be when tv
programmes and films use your music. This is also a good money making
technique, but isnt
as big as promoting it other shops.
TASK TWO -
For my task two, I have been asked to identify and example they styles,
conventions and techniques of music videos.
STYLES -
Animation (Stop motion, Digital)
Stop motion animation is the sequence of illustrated drawings - that
give the illusion of a moving image and can give a music video more song
meaning. As you will or not know there are many kinds of animations, which vary
from; Pixilation, cut-outs and digital. In the music industry animated music
videos can be financially profitable as the aren't many really created.
(Take on me - A-ha)
Narrative
Normally referred to as stories; Narratives, can give the music video
more song meaning by letting the audience know what it en-tales and what it is
about. Having more song meaning in music videos can help the artist make more
income and also can help connect with the audiences more. An example of
Narrative music videos can be Cyndi Laupers - Girls just want to have fun. Why this is a example of
Narrative is because during the song the video fits nicely with the audio. What
I mean by this is that the video shows females having fun which is meant in the
song name too.
(Cyndi Lauper - Girls just want to have fun)
Live Footage
Live footage in music videos technically show the audience live
performances from the artist that they are listening too or people covering the
artist. Also these performances normally are captured from tours or gigs. This
type of style can be profitable and give the artist alot more income, but maybe not as much as
a narrative and animated music video as they normallly cut-to-beat which can be alot more entertaining. A example of a live
footage music videos can be Swedish house Mafia's - Don't
you worry child where they filmed at there very last tour just before they split up -
released in 2012.
(Swedish house mafia - Don't you
worry child)
Interpretative
A Interpretative music videos are used to show people's different human
emotions, situations etc and is a form of dancing which was design in the early
1900 hundred. This type of genre is used in Sia's music tracks like 'Elastic Heart and
Chandelier' which normally doesn't really make any sense when watching but from
it shows a lot of emotion as at one point the little girl can appear happy and
then seem sad and depressed.
(Sia - Elastic Heart)
Impressionist
As you might already know Impressionist are Actor/Artist which pretend
to be somebody that they aren't. They tend to use impressionist in music videos
to show there
audience what type of people they are or what they are really like and what
they used to do, but it isnt only
music videos were you can see this as you can see impressionist in movies,
television programmes etc also. An example of this can be in Katy Perry's music
video 'Dark Horse' where she dresses and acts like Cleopatra the famous
historian Egyptian Queen (69 BC - August 12 30 BC).
(Katy Perry - Dark Horse featuring
Juicy J)
Parody
As you might see a impressionist music video is very much like Parody's,
but also very different. What I mean by this is that it is impersonating
another persons
style but they do it in a more comedic and humour way and of cause they take
the mick off the
original singer of the song which they are mimicking instead of dressing
up as a old Egyptian queen like you have probably seen in Dark Horse by Katy
Perry. An example of a parodied music video can be the Meghan Trainer - Lips
are moving mocked by a famous parodist youtuber - Bart Baker whose well know for ones
like the Nicki Minaj
- Anaconda parody and many more.
(Meghan Trainer - Lips
are moving PARODY)
Referencing
Referencing in music videos can be from a artist telling a story of a
certain part of their lives for example in a more musical note. An example of
referencing in music videos can be in Rihanna's song - We found love. Why this can be
referencing is throughout her video she seems to be referencing her previous
relationship with Chris Brown by telling her fans what really went on with them
and showing them how it was fine at first and how it finally turned bad for
her. Also it is pretty obvious who she is on about as she uses an actor who
looks almost identical to Chris.
(Rihanna - We
found love)
CONVENTIONS -
Links to other artist
Linking to other artist in music videos is where you see another artist
in the video typically not associated with the song - like my example, McFly - Love is on the
radio. Why this example is a 'Link to other artist' music video is because it has a
person dressed like Michael Jackson in it.
(Love is on the radio - McFly
Lyric Interpretation
Lyric Interpretation is shown in music videos by peoples feelings towards certain things.
You can make sense of this in Justin Bieber's music video - What do you mean. Why this song is a
lyric interpretation is because this type of video doesn't explain and describe
what the girl or location looks like for instance.
(What do you mean - Justin Bieber)
Allusion
Allusions are normally found in music videos from like cars exploding
and horrific car crashes. When this is shown in music videos people would these
type of allusion real. A
example of allusion in music videos can be Billy Joel - We didn't start the
fire. Why this is a
allusion video is because when Billy is sat in front of the fire which is
appearing behind. That fire wouldn't be there, but in fact probably on a
green screen making it look real.
(Billy Joel - We Didn't Start The Fire official music
video)
TECHNIQUES -
Cutting to beat
A cut to beat music video can be spread across various things like
videos and images. When making one you would leave your audio as its and use
the cut the video in beat with the audio to give it a more effective. This type
of techniques is very professional. Why this is profession is because it takes
lots of precious time to create something like this. A example of cutting to
beat music videos can be Kanye
West and Jay Z's music video - N*****s in Paris.
(N*****s in Paris - Kanye West and Jay-Z)
Miming and Lip Syncing
Miming and Lip syncing is where people would mime (act) to a song that
is playing. So for an
example like the video below. He starts copying off some of the dance
moves that where
used within the 'UPTOWN FUNK' music video. They would also start lip moving
with the singer without actually singing. People normally use these type of
Techniques for humor and
to make people laugh, but isn't that professional.
(Uptown funk miming and lip syncing
video)
Camera Movement
Like I may have said before Camera Movement can show many different
emotions for a music video. What I mean by this is because if you have a slow
motion video it can signal a sad and emotional response to the audience like in
eyes shut by Years and Years, then if you were to have a more upbeat music
video the camera movement would be a lot faster like Last Night by
The Vamps and they might even have still shots, which can still show a
good response if the artist are moving more. This type of technique can
be professional, but not always. What I mean by this is people that
make music videos that don't necessarily have any form of degree etc in the media industry can
make music videos like this.
(Years and Years - Eyes shut)
Chroma Key
Like green
screens, Chroma
keys are used to remove things from shot which give the impression that they
aren't there when they really are. Like McBusted's - Air Guitar they use Chroma Keys for
disappearances and reappearances like for example when James is moon
walking his whole body disappears, but his feet are still
there. This type of effects improves the music video a lot as Chroma Keys aren't really
used much in music videos and if that's the case they may get more
money for it as it is entertaining and gets the audience excited of what
may or may not happen next. This type of techniques is very good way in
getting more attention from
the audiences. Also it is a very professional way for making music videos.
(McBusted -
Air Guitar)
